How To Tell Time

How to Ask Time?

What’s the time?

What time is it?

Do you have the time?

What time do you have?

Do you know what time it is?

Have you got the time?

Could you tell me the time please?

Can you tell me what time it is, please?

Let’s learn how to tell time!

Note: We tell the minutes first and then the hour.

Ex: 04.20 – It is twenty past four.

O'clock

We use o'clock when there are no minutes.

8:00 - It's eight o'clock

11:00 - It's eleven o'clock

3:00 - It's three o'clock

Past

We use ‘past’ for minutes 01-30.

12.10- It is ten past twelve.

05.25- It is twenty-five past five.

12.05- It is five past twelve.

09.20- It is twenty past nine.

To

We use ‘to’ for minutes 31-59. We tell the next hour after ‘to’.

09.40- It is twenty to ten.

03.55- It is five to four.

02.50- It is ten to three.

05.45- It is (a) quarter to six.

Half

We use half for 30 mins.

10.30- It is half past ten.

11.30- It is half past eleven.

05.30- It is half past five.

Quarter

We use quarter for 15 mins.

7.15- It is (a) quarter past seven.

08.15- It is (a) quarter past eight.

11.45- It is (a) quarter to twelve.

02.45- It is (a) quarter to three.

Note: We can tell time in another way without using to and past. You can firstly hour then minutes in this way. Check the examples below.

7:25 - It's seven twenty-five.

5:10 - It's five O-ten. (O is pronounced as the letter O.)

9:13- It's nine thirteen.

8:46 - It's eight fourty-six.

A.M. and P.M.

People don’t tell 13.00 after 12.00. They use pm and am to distinguish noon and midnight.

While expressing the time between 00.00 and 11:00 (for the morning) we use A.M, we use P.M. to express the time between 12.00 and 23.00 (for the afternoon and night).

Examples:

He goes work at 08:00 a.m.

I will take the train at 07:20 p.m.

The school finishes at 03:30 p.m.
