What is grammar and why is it important?

Grammar is the study of words and how they are used in sentences and situations. It is an entire systematic study and description of a language with a set of rules people need to follow. Also, grammar is an important factor in learning a new language. It consists of many different branches, such as parts of speech, tenses, and syntax.

Why is it important to learn all the rules of grammar?

Simply, it is important to learn grammar so that we can use the language as a native speaker, to be more fluent.

Do we need to study grammar to learn a language?

No, we can communicate in a language without ever learning the rules of grammar. But, if you really want to be a proficient speaker, you should consider grammar as your friend in achieving that goal. Grammar helps you improve your reading and writing skills. When you have the grasp of basic structures, it is easier to analyse and improve your performance. When you know the correct usage of parts of speech, such as verbs, adverbs, nouns, etc., it helps you to write English better.

Another thing is that grammar helps communication. In order to communicate effectively and to express themselves well, the knowledge of grammar helps enhance people’s accuracy. For example, if you do not know tenses or use incorrect word forms, you can confuse the person you are speaking to. Hence, if you want to maintain a clear and interesting conversation, you should be aware of English grammar rules.

If you are feeling insecure about your grammar and do not know where to start, here are some useful tips for you:

1.       Every single word in English can be put into a category. In English language, there are eight categories, that is, there are eight word groups. These word groups are called parts of speech. The eight parts of speech are nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Each of these categories has rules when and how to use them and recognize them. It is important to be able to recognize them.

2.       The second tip is about sentences. As we know, a sentence is a group of word put together in a certain order which has a meaning. In English language, all complete sentences have a subject (someone or something), and a verb (an action or a state of being). Here is an example: She (subject) is singing (verb).

3.       After you become aware of different parts of speech and sentence structure, now comes the fun part of learning phrases. Phrases are groups of words that have a function of a single unit. English language has a number of different types of phrases, but once you start to learn them, you will see that they are not scary!

4.       Now that you have mastered phrases, you can move on to clauses. Clauses are also a group of words, but all clauses have a subject and a verb in it. Clauses also function as single parts of speech – just as phrases! Here is a nice example of a clause: The woman [who looked happy] danced. In this sentence, the clause is [who looked happy] because these three words are all used to describe the woman.

To wrap everything up, grammar can be understood as a set of rules which help us learn a language. It may seem difficult at first, but remember that it is your friend in sounding more fluent and professional in a different language. Once you master the basics of it, learning a new language will become a hundred times easier. Following these steps may be helpful, but do not forget that every person learns in their own way and have their own techniques. So, if you do not find these steps useful, do not worry. Find your own way and never give up!
